Rome Walking Tours: Day Excursions

The Roman Countryside Tour

Description

Your driver will pick you up at your accommodations and accompany you to Tivoli, a historic hill town lying east of Rome in the breathtaking Monte Tiburtini hills. Your guide will meet you at the Villa d’Este, a former Benedictine convent considered to be one of the most enchanting villas of the late Renaissance period. You’ll discover how the building was created as a lavish home for the son of Lucretia Borgia, that scandalous Italian duchess who created so much drama in 15th century Italy. The famous Fountain of Neptune is only one of the villa’s 500 fountains; its other outdoor delights include stunning gardens, impressive waterfalls, and trees that are hundreds of years old. Your guide will then take you to the famed villa of the second century Emperor Hadrian, which include ruins of more than 30 buildings, including a sprawling complex of thermal baths, libraries, temples, and underground passages wide enough for cars. Afterwards, you’ll enjoy lunch at the nearby Ristorante La Sibilla. Built in 1730 next to the ancient circular Temple of Vesta and Sanctuary of the Sybil, its terrace garden has a spectacular view over the deep gorge of the Aniene River. Sit back and enjoy views of the Italian countryside on your way back to Rome.
