Rome Walking Tours: Art and Museum Tours
In the Footsteps of Caravaggio
Your guide will pick you up at your accommodations for a spectacular exploration of Baroque Rome through the life and art of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, a painter whose work basically defines the Baroque era. Beginning in the iconic Piazza del Popolo, you will visit the church of Santa Maria del Popolo, which, in addition to housing Caravaggio’s “Conversion of Saint Paul” and “Crucifixion of St. Peter,” houses the spectacular Chigi chapel, designed by Raphael and embellished by Bernini. At the church of San Luigi dei Francesi, in Piazza Navona, are Caravaggio’s paintings depicting the life of Saint Matthew, 1 of the 12 apostles of Jesus, painted between 1599–1600. The tour will end at Piazza Sant’Agostino in the small church by the same name, which houses the “Madonna di Loreto,” an early Caravaggio work that places the Baroque in contrast with what came before. Interestingly, the facade of the church was built in 1483 using travertine rock taken from the Colosseum!
