Discovering Catania: A City Carved from Lava

Piazza del Duomo and the Cathedral of Saint Agatha
Begin your tour in the heart of Catania at the Piazza del Duomo, a stunning example of Sicilian Baroque architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage site. At the center of the square, marvel at the Fontana dell’Elefante, featuring an ancient Roman elephant statue that is considered the city’s symbol. The Cathedral of Saint Agatha, dedicated to Catania’s patron saint, showcases magnificent baroque art and houses the relics of St. Agatha in its richly adorned chapels.

The Lively Fish Market (La Pescheria)
Just steps from the Piazza del Duomo, experience the vibrant atmosphere of La Pescheria, Catania’s famous fish market. This bustling market offers a glimpse into the city’s maritime culture, with vendors selling a wide variety of fresh seafood, from swordfish and octopus to sea urchins. The sights, sounds, and smells here are a testament to the importance of the sea in Catania’s culinary traditions.

Via Etnea and the Gardens
Stroll along Via Etnea, the city’s main shopping street, which stretches from the Piazza del Duomo towards Mount Etna. Lined with elegant shops, cafes, and baroque buildings, Via Etnea is perfect for leisurely exploration. Along the way, visit the verdant Villa Bellini, Catania’s largest public park, offering beautiful walkways, statues, and panoramic views of the city against the backdrop of Mount Etna.

The Roman Amphitheatre and Ursino Castle
Delve into Catania’s ancient past at the Roman Amphitheatre, situated in the heart of the city. This impressive structure, partially buried under lava from past eruptions, reveals the grand scale of Roman entertainment and public life. Continue to the Ursino Castle, built in the 13th century by Emperor Frederick II. Once a coastal fortress, the castle now hosts the Civic Museum, with collections spanning from the city’s founding to the present day.
