Venice Walking Tours: Day Excursions

Excursion to the Town of Asolo and the Venetian Villas

Description

Your guide will meet you at your accommodations and accompany you to meet your driver. This region was, for most of its history, an independent republic, beginning life at the close of the Roman Empire as an outpost of refugees fleeing barbarian invaders; by the early Renaissance, thanks to some strategic looting and a location at the head of the Adriatic Sea, it had become an independent “republic” and one of the richest and most powerful cities in Europe. It did not become part of Italy until the 19th century. This tour begins with the beautiful 16th to 18th century villas along the Brenta Canal, built during the height of Venice’s influence; more than just glorified summer homes, these were separate economic operations where rich, aristocratic Venetians became wealthier through farming and exploitation of land resources. Asolo, the next stop on the tour, is an enchanting medieval hill town that was an Italian retreat of Robert Browning, Eleonora Duse, and Ernest Hemingway. The return to Venice provides another look at settings in which the classical master Palladio built villas for the pleasure of Venetian nobles.
